Neal Dunn

Neal Dunn (R-Fla.) has represented Florida’s 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2017. He ran for his fourth term in 2022 with Trump’s endorsement, and won with more than 60 percent of the vote.

A surgeon, Dunn served in the Army, reached the rank of major, and completed his residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He then worked as a surgeon in private practice in Panama City, Florida for 25 years.

In Congress, Dunn has largely voted in line with ultra-conservatives, leading the Heritage Foundation’s political advocacy arm Heritage Action for America to give him a score of 89% for the 2021–22 session. In 2021, he earned an A+ rating from Susan B. Anthony List for his staunch anti-abortion stance, and in 2016, the National Rifle Association ranked him an AQ, “the highest rating possible for a non-incumbent.”

After the 2020 presidential election, Dunn helped spread the Big Lie, objected to certifying the Electoral College results, and voted against both impeaching Trump for inciting the violent attack on the Capitol and establishing a special House committee to investigate it, among other measures.

January 6, 2021

  • Just hours after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, Dunn joined 146 other congressional Republicans in refusing to certify Biden’s win of the 2020 presidential election. In a statement released that day, he wrote: “The violent behavior we’re currently seeing is abhorrent and unacceptable…. I absolutely do not condone the behavior of the protestors who have breached security and broken the law. While I will still contest the electoral college results today, I will do so in a peaceful and lawful way.”
  • Dunn voted against impeaching Trump for his role in inciting the insurrection.
  • Dunn voted against establishing a House committee to investigate the Jan. 6 attack, saying that given multiple other congressional and Justice Department investigations into the insurrection, appointing a special commission was unnecessary

The Big Lie

  • On Dec. 10, 2020, Dunn signed an amicus brief in a lawsuit filed by the state of Texas urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the results of the presidential election in four swing states: Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
  • On Jan. 5, 2021, Dunn signed a letter from Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Texas) to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) signaling his intent to object to certifying Biden’s Electoral College victory. He also tweeted: “We must ensure that EVERY American’s voice is heard & every legal vote is counted.”
  • On Mar. 3, 2021, Dunn voted against the voter protection legislation H.R. 1 (the For the People Act), claiming that: “House Democrats continue to prove that they are here to serve themselves, not you. Today’s vote tramples on the Constitution and steals your taxpayer dollars to pay for their own political campaigns.”
  • In January 2022, Dunn did not respond to questions posed by a Florida news channel about his thoughts on the insurrection a year later.
