Richard Hudson

About

Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) has represented North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2013. Due to redistricting, he is running for reelection in the 9th District in 2022—with Trump’s endorsement—and is expected to win in his solidly Republican district.

A lifelong conservative, Hudson is a pro-gun, anti-abortion activist who worked for a number of Republican candidates and lawmakers prior to his own election a decade ago. He also served as a director of communications for the North Carolina Republican Party in the 1990s and ran a consulting firm, Cabarrus Marketing Group, which he closed once he took office.

Hudson has been very active on the National Republican Campaign Committee, has been Deputy Republican Whip in the House since 2013, and serves as House Republican Conference Secretary. He is also a member of the conservative Republican Study Committee.

In 2012, Hudson questioned President Obama’s citizenship status when speaking to a Tea Party group, claiming: “there’s no question [he] is hiding something on his citizenship.” In 2017, he supported President Trump’s travel ban prohibiting citizens from predominantly Muslim countries from entering the U.S.. In February 2022, Hudson accused Facebook of censoring him for spreading disinformation about spying by Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign during the 2016 election.

After the 2020 presidential election, Hudson showed his loyalty to Trump by voting against certifying Biden’s Electoral College win, impeaching Trump for inciting the mob, and establishing a special House committee to investigate the insurrection, among other measures.

  • Just hours after pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol, Hudson joined 146 other congressional Republicans in refusing to certify Biden’s win of the 2020 presidential election.
  • Hudson voted against impeaching Trump for his role in instigating the attack on Congress and the Capitol, and for fanning the flames once the violence erupted.
  • Hudson voted against establishing a House committee to investigate the attack on the Capitol.

The Big Lie

  • On Nov. 7, 2020, Hudson tweeted: “Americans deserve transparency & I support President Trump’s calls to ensure every legal vote is counted & the rule of law is protected.”
  • On Dec. 10, 2020, Hudson signed an amicus brief in a lawsuit filed by the state of Texas urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the results of the presidential election in four swing states: Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
  • On Jan. 3, 2021, Hudson announced that he would vote against certifying Biden’s Electoral College win, saying: “Every American should want to ensure our election laws were followed correctly and investigate every case of alleged fraud, no matter how it would impact the outcome of the election. I am also concerned about the impact big tech bias and censorship had on this election.”
  • Like so many of his GOP colleagues in Congress who support the Big Lie, Hudson has benefited financially since he voted against certifying Biden’s election and , garnering the fourth largest amount of corporate donations in support of his reelection.
