About
Greg Steube (R-Fla.) has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2019, representing Florida’s 17th Congressional District. He ran for reelection in 2022 with Trump’s endorsement and won in his solidly Republican district.
Before being elected to Congress, Steube served for eight years in the Florida state legislature. He is a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Committee on the Judiciary as well as the right-wing House Freedom Caucus and the conservative Republican Study Committee.
After the 2020 presidential election, Steube adhered to the GOP playbook by spreading the Big Lie and casting doubt on the legitimacy of Biden’s victory. He objected to certifying the Electoral College results and voted against both impeaching Trump for inciting the mob and establishing a special House committee to investigate the insurrection, among other measures.
January 6, 2021
- Just hours after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, Steube joined 146 other congressional Republicans in refusing to certify Biden’s win of the 2020 presidential election.
- Steube voted against impeaching Trump for his role in inciting the attack on Congress and the Capitol, and for fanning the flames once the riot broke out.
- On May 19, 2021, Steube voted against establishing a House committee to investigate the genesis of the violent assault that disrupted congressional proceedings underway that day.
The Big Lie
- Steube used his Twitter platform to cast doubt on the results of the 2020 election.
- For example, on Nov. 6, 2020, after mail-in ballots began to trickle in favoring Biden, he tweeted: “‘Finding’ ballots overnight is sketchy. 100% of those ballots going to one candidate is even more concerning.” In fact, it was expected that mail-in ballots would be counted later in the night and that Democratic voters, who were more likely to be concerned about contracting Covid if they voted in person, would send ballots in the mail in higher numbers.
- On Nov. 7, he tweeted: “Until we can confirm every ballot counted was legal, this race is far from over.”
- In a Jan. 6, 2021 tweet announcing his decision to object to the certification of the 2020 presidential election, he wrote that “blatant improprieties” had “marred the 2020 election.”
- On Nov. 6, 2020, Steube and 38 other House Republicans signed a letter to Attorney General William Barr asking the Justice Department to investigate “widespread reports of irregularities” during the presidential ballot count.
- On December 1, 2020, Steube and 36 other representatives submitted a follow-up letter to Barr again requesting a DOJ investigation and claiming that there had been “a number of anomalies, statistical improbabilities and accusations of fraud” during the election.
- On Dec. 10, 2020, Steube signed an amicus brief in the Texas v. Pennsylvania lawsuit urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the results of the election in four swing states: Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
- On Dec. 15, 2020, Steube signed a letter to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) ostensibly to request a “briefing” on the subject of voter fraud in the 2020 election. The public letter restated a litany of unproven and discredited claims of voter fraud that had already been circulating on social media.
- On Dec. 17, 2020, Steube and 18 other Republican members of Congress sent a letter to Senate Minority Leader. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and other congressional leaders requesting that Congress investigate the results of the presidential election.
- Steube signed onto a Jan. 6, 2021 statement issued by 37 House Republicans claiming that “the election of 2020 became riddled with an unprecedented number of serious allegations of fraud and irregularities.” The statement failed to provide any evidence that would support these allegations.
