About
Barry Moore (R-Ala.) was first sworn in to the U.S. House of Representatives on Jan. 3, 2021, serving Alabama’s largely rural 2nd Congressional District in the southeastern part of the state. In 2022, he ran for a second term with Trump’s endorsement and won in his solidly Republican district.
Previously, Moore served as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 2010–18, and owned and operated a waste hauling and demolition company. He cites the company he founded as evidence of the American Dream, telling Fox News: “I started my garbage company driving the truck… and I sit here before you today as a garbage man… in Congress and it’s because those freedoms and opportunities were afforded to me.”
In April 2014, Moore was arrested on charges of felony perjury and providing false statements to officials working for Alabama’s attorney general to investigate public corruption related to an economic development deal. A jury found him not guilty in October 2014.
Moore claims in his website to be the first elected official in the U.S. to publicly endorse Trump in 2015. In 2021, the right-wing Club for Growth PAC endorsed him in his midterm bid for reelection in 2022. After the 2020 presidential election, Moore adhered to the GOP playbook by spreading the Big Lie and casting doubt on the legitimacy of the process. He objected to certifying Biden’s Electoral College win and voted against both impeaching Trump for inciting the mob and establishing a special House committee to investigate the insurrection, among other measures.
January 6, 2021
- Just hours after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, Moore joined 146 other congressional Republicans in refusing to certify Biden’s win of the 2020 presidential election.
- Moore deleted his Twitter account after posting controversial tweets about the Jan. 6 insurrection. He first wrote, “we have more arrests for stealing a podium on Jan. 6th than we do for stealing an election on November 3rd.” In another tweet, he made a racial comment, saying: “I understand it was a black police officer that shot the white female veteran… You know that doesn’t fit the narrative.”
- Moore opposed impeaching Trump for his role in instigating the attack on Congress and the Capitol, and for fanning the flames once the riot broke out. In a prepared statement, he called the move “as divisive as it is unproductive.”
- Moore voted against establishing a House committee to investigate the genesis of the violent assault on the Capitol and disruption of the congressional procedure underway that day. He called it a “partisan circus.”
- In June 2021, Moore was one of the 21 House Republicans to vote against awarding a Congressional Gold Medal to the Capitol Police.
The Big Lie
- On Dec. 15, 2020, Moore and 25 other House members-elect signed a letter calling on Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to investigate irregularities in the 2020 presidential election.
- A day after being sworn in to Congress, Moore pledged to reject certification of the 2020 Electoral College results, stating “”We [sic] got to get it right. We [sic] got to make sure that either 70 or 80 million people don’t feel disenfranchised and feel like it was stolen, regardless of which direction it goes.”
- In January 2022, Moore soundly rejected Democrats’ attempts to reform election laws, saying that they amounted to “brazenly canceling out legitimate American votes by openly funneling millions of illegal immigrants to the voting booth and assaulting voter I.D. laws.”
