Michael Cloud

About

Michael Cloud (R-Texas) has represented Texas’ 27th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives since winning a special election in July 2018. He won reelection in 2022 with Trump’s endorsement and more than 60% of the vote.

A former small business owner, he ran the marketing and advertising company Bright Ideas Media and also worked as the media and communications director at Faith Family Church in Victoria, Texas. The congressman now collaborates with Christians Engaged, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that sets up speaking arrangements for him at churches and promotes his political positions, including to “protect the unborn” and “defend religious freedoms.”

Cloud has shown his loyalty to Trump by helping to spread the Big Lie and voting against certification of the Electoral College results, impeachment, and the establishment of a House committee to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection, among other measures.

January 6, 2021

  • Just hours after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, Cloud joined 146 other congressional Republicans in refusing to certify Biden’s win of the 2020 presidential election. He justified his vote by claiming that in the midst of the pandemic election regulations set by state legislatures were improperly changed in several states.
  • In voting against impeaching Trump for his role in inciting the insurrection, Cloud released a statement saying that “under current Democratic leadership, impeachment has become a politicized tool—part of the cancel culture movement of the left to silence dissent.”
  • Cloud voted against establishing a House committee to investigate the attack on the Capitol.

The Big Lie

  • On Nov. 6 and Dec. 1, 2020, Cloud signed letters from a group of House Republicans to Attorney General Bill Barr urging the Justice Department to investigate irregularities and accusations of fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
  • On Dec. 7, 2020, he also appeared on OAN to call on Attorney General Barr to release the findings of DOJ investigations into election fraud.
  • On Dec. 10, 2020, Cloud signed an amicus brief in a lawsuit filed by the state of Texas urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the results of the presidential election in four swing states: Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
