About
Garret Graves (R-La.) has represented Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District (which includes his hometown of Baton Rouge) in the U.S House of Representatives since 2015. Although he is looking ahead to a possible run for governor in 2023, he ran for reelection in 2022 to serve his fifth term in Congress and won.
Although Graves is the ranking member on the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis and also serves on the House Natural Resources Committee, his congressional campaigns have been largely funded by the oil and gas industry. Prior to his election to Congress, he served as the head of the Louisiana Coastal Restoration and Protection Authority under Gov. Bobby Jindal (R).
Graves has not always voted in lockstep with Trump and the GOP, but after the 2020 presidential election, he voted against certifying the results, impeaching Trump for inciting the mob, and establishing a special House committee to investigate the insurrection, among other measures.
January 6, 2021
- Just hours after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, Graves joined 146 other congressional Republicans in refusing to certify Biden’s win of the 2020 presidential election, voting against certifying the results in Pennsylvania.
- In the aftermath of the attack on the Capitol, Graves voted against impeaching Trump for his role in inciting the insurrection but did hold the then-president accountable, admitting on radio station WWL, “All of these were just senseless, senseless deaths that should not have happened, which of course goes back to what in my opinion was a big part of this and it was the ridiculous comments the president made on the Ellipse near the White House.”
- Still, Graves voted against establishing a House committee to investigate the Jan. 6 attack.
