On Jan. 6, 2021, pro-Trump demonstrators protested at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus. The protest descended into violence when right-wing protesters fought with BLM members and other progressive groups. Ohio Highway Patrol troopers and Columbus Police officers were called in to break up the skirmishes. The right-wing activists held their rally under the banner of the “Stop the Steal” movement which had organized protests against perceived election fraud around the country since Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election.
Members of the Proud Boys, a hate group, were present at the Ohio rally. Proud Boys members were also instrumental in planning and executing the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on the same day. Numerous demonstrators at the Ohio Statehouse were armed with assault weapons.
