Lance Gooden (R-Texas) has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2019, representing Texas’ 5th Congressional District (which includes parts of Dallas). Heran for reelection in 2022 with Trump’s endorsement and won.
A member of the ultra-conservative Republican Study Committee, Gooden considers “banning sanctuary cities” as a primary policy priority and claims that his surprising vote in support of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act was accidental.
After the 2020 presidential election, Gooden helped spread the Big Lie, objected to certifying President Biden’s electoral win, and voted against both impeaching Trump for inciting the mob and establishing a special House committee to investigate the insurrection, among other measures.
January 6, 2021
- Gooden was billed as a featured speaker at Ali Alexander’s “Wild Protest” slated to take place outside the Capitol on Jan. 6. The event ended up being canceled once the riot broke out.
- Just hours after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, Gooden joined 146 other congressional Republicans in refusing to certify Biden’s win of the 2020 presidential election.
- Gooden voted against impeaching Trump for his role in inciting the insurrection. In a brief speech on the House floor, he said nothing about the deadly violence of the previous week and instead said, among other things: “I’m really tired of sanctimonious sermons on being a sore loser from some of the same Democrats who opposed accepting results in elections past.”
- Gooden voted against establishing a House committee to investigate the Jan. 6 attack.
- He also voted against holding former presidential advisor Steve Bannon in contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the House Select Committee investigation.
The Big Lie
- Gooden regularly spread disinformation on Twitter about the integrity of the 2020 election, using the hashtag “America First,” a reference to the far-right group started by white nationalist Nick Fuentes.
- On Dec. 9, 2020. Gooden joined 26 other House Republicans in urging Trump to direct Attorney General Bill Barr to appoint a special counsel to investigate the results of the 2020 presidential election.
- On Dec. 10, 2020, Gooden signed an amicus brief in a lawsuit filed by the state of Texas urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the results of the presidential election in four swing states: Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
- On Dec. 17, 2020, Gooden was one of 19 House Republicans who signed a letter to House committee members demanding an investigation into allegations of fraud in the 2020 election.
- On Dec. 19, 2020, Gooden suggested circumventing the Justice Department when it failed to investigate bogus claims of election fraud.
